FFEI was approached by a world leader in the development of digital inkjet technology and an award-winning manufacturer of piezoelectric drop-on-demand industrial inkjet print heads. Their technology is used all over the world in a wide range of manufacturing applications, including graphics, labels, direct-to-shape packaging decoration, ceramic tiles, laminates, and outer case coding – as well as printing with specialist functional fluids for advanced manufacturing techniques. At the time the client had capability in print head development and supply but wanted a partner capable of developing complete digital print systems.
WHO - INKJET PRINT HEAD MANUFACTURER
Award-winning manufacturer of piezoelectric industrial inkjet print heads.
REACH - TECHNOLOGY DEPLOYED GLOBALLY
Client technology used in a wide range of manufacturing applications
NEED - BRING COMPLETE SYSTEM TO MARKET
Wanted a partner capable of developing complete digital print systems.
In the fast moving world of digital print the client recognised a new market opportunity to develop and bring to market their own ‘final’ solution which incorporates their own Print head technology – a digital inkjet print bar.
PROVEN INKJET EXPERTISE
MANUFACTURER OF INDUSTRIAL GRADE SOLUTIONS
Having considered several options they concluded that FFEI were their final choice. Not only did FFEI have market knowledge and marketing experience in the growing digital print market, we also had a proven capability for integrating inkjet print heads into a final, industrial grade solution.
In just a few months, FFEI were able to design and productise a 16” wide single colour digital inkjet print bar ready for commercial launch. Building on existing proven digital inkjet technology and incorporating a number of new bespoke elements, to fine-tune the Print bar to its specific market niche.
Phase 1 – design
Product specification developed to meet customer needs
FFEI’s R&D team visited a number of prospective industry clients to market test various concepts, gathering details on cost benefits and workflow issues. From here they were able to develop a product specification not just for the physical digital inkjet print bar design, but also how to package the solution to allow it to be easily incorporated onto various label presses.
Phase 2 – market testing
Alpha model tested & full development roadmap prepared
Following FFEI’s ‘V’ model development framework and ‘stage gate’ process, the first alpha model was made available for market testing in just a few months. Working closely with the client and market users, detailed feedback was prepared and incorporated into a full development road map.
Phase 3 – productisation
Product manufactured, with training and support provided
Once market feedback was incorporated into the final designs, FFEI were then able to fully productise the digital inkjet print bar. This included training client staff on how to install, operate and support the digital print bar in the field.
