Job title: Electrical/Electronic Engineer

    Overall purpose of role:

    Electrical/Electronic Engineers have well developed engineering skills and are responsible for designing, testing, supporting electro-mechanical sub-system developments which are part of a larger product development with minimum supervision, working alongside other Engineers and Scientists. They are also responsible for transferring designs to manufacturing and are responsible for working in cross functional Engineering Teams.

    Engineers use general engineering, math and science skills to assist staff across the business to create products, improving manufacturing methods, maintaining assembly systems and provide general engineering effort as required.

    Role scope:

    The role covers new product development and post development support within Research and Development. Products are engineered for low/medium volume production, typically 10 off – Hundreds of units/annum and involve complex systems with optical, mechanical, Ink jet, electronic and software content.

    Principal Accountabilities:

    • Defines and contributes to the definition of requirements and associated design specifications for new and modifications to Electrical and Electronic circuits and sub-systems.

    • Responsible for the quality of their own aspects of Electrical and Electronic designs, achieved using FFEI tools, standards, procedures and Electronic Data Management tools. Participates in design reviews of their own work and the work of others.

    • Ensures that own designs can be manufactured and serviced by involving manufacturing engineers, customer support engineers and suppliers during development.

    • Develops PCB component layout shapes, wiring diagrams, layout drawings, and engineering specifications for system or equipment using CAD/CAE tools.

    • Works within a team to build, integrate and test sub-systems, rigs and fixtures, including the writing of test specifications and the collation of test results.

    • Interfaces and works with Regulatory bodies regarding Electrical compliance, Machinery Directives etc as required.

    • Ensures that manufacturing targets are achievable for own designs and that technical issues are corrected by supporting manufacturing during the pre-production, launch and early life failure phases.

    • Assists customer support prepare technical manuals, training courses etc. and by resolving design issues which occur during early product life.

    Person Specification:

    Education & knowledge:

      • BSc or an equivalent vocational qualification in Electrical/Electronic Engineering.
      • Minimum 5 years’ experience working within Electrical or Electronic product support or development environment.

    Technical skills:

    Knowledge, experience and interest in some of the following areas is essential:

      • Electrical and Electronic equipment design, installation, support.
      • Formal Electrical compliance (Electrician) qualification desirable.
      • Electronic circuit design and test.
      • Cable harnesses (Specification primarily).
      • Electro Optical/Mechanical systems.
      • Debugging/fault finding (Scope & Logic Analysis).
      • Electronic Data Management systems use experience (AGILE).
      • Electronic PCB design/layout engineering.
      • CAD/CAE development environments.
      • Product development from concept through to manufacture.
      • Office suite PC literate.
