Job title: Manufacturing Engineering Manager

Overall purpose of role:

The Manufacturing Engineering Manager is a key member of the Operations Management team and works closely with manufacturing, supply chain, quality and customer support as well as the development teams. They manage a team to ensure FFEI is equipped through processes, tooling, equipment and documentation to produce high quality products, on time and within targeted costs.

They represent the company’s manufacturing capability to key existing and new partners and ensure products are developed in accordance with best principles for manufacturability.

The role provides a link between product development and the manufacturing and operations teams to ensure products are designed with consideration for components, tooling, assembly and serviceability.

Principal Accountabilities:

The role holder will have full accountability for the company manufacturing engineering capability and product technical performance throughout production life. This includes, but is not limited to:

  • Manage a team of engineering staff to achieve appropriate goals through objectives, motivation, coaching, training and direction.

  • Planning and efficient execution of relevant parts of the New Product Introduction process, including contributing to documentation and presenting at gate reviews.

  • Preparation, presentation and discussion of data and processes to key stakeholders and business partners.

  • Ensure processes, documentation and tooling are in place to meet all required quality, cost and production metrics appropriate to the product line in manufacture.

  • Work collaboratively across functions and at all levels in the organisation through participation in core teams and with R&D.

  • Capacity planning to ensure appropriate space, equipment, facilities, and trained resources are in place to support the production plan.

  • Managing technical staff to ensure speedy and effective corrective action and resolution of production issues.

  • Manage engineering change ensuring master data integrity with clearly defined NPI process handover points with development teams.

  • Continuously monitor and develop the engineering/technical skills base within manufacturing.

  • Drive continuous process & product improvement through lean techniques and value engineering to remove waste and improve efficiency.

  • Identification, measurement and reporting of KPI’s relevant to manufacturing metrics including cost, labour, yield and engineering change.

  • Identifies and sets best principles for new product design in tooling, assembly time, parts count, serviceability and other product manufacturability targets along with appropriate KPI’s.

  • Conduct risk assessments of processes and participate in quality audits as required.

  • Responsibility for “hands-on” engineering functions as above for a specific product or range of products will also form part of the manager’s role.

Person Specification:

Education, knowledge, skills & experience:

Essential skills

  • BSc (or equiv) in appropriate Engineering discipline
  • Minimum 10 years engineering experience (2 of which in engineering management) within high technology, high value manufacturing operation
  • Experience of ‘continuous improvement systems’ (Kaizen, QC circles, 5S, etc), and the ability to translate and implement into a low overhead small company environment
  • Able to prepare concise, accurate documents with excellent attention to detail
  • Experience in preparation and presentation of data to senior stakeholders and partners
  • Excellent understanding and appropriate experience in the fields of Design Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering and Quality Engineering
  • Strong experience of technical problem solving within a complex/dynamic environment
  • Able to conduct performance reviews, including personal objective setting
  • Commercial acumen to analyse and implement the lowest total cost solution
  • Experience of managing in-house engineering activities across multidiscipline teams
  • Experience in managing and setting budgets
  • Experience of use/management of engineering change process/system
  • Capable user of MS Office applications


  • Experience of business plan development and delivery
  • Experience developing and implementing technical/business processes
  • Experience of working in a Quality Assured environment
  • Knowledge of engineering apprenticeship process and structure and experience of managing an engineering apprentice
  • Experience in SAP and/or similar MRP system
